Jessica Douglas
Two keys to the enduring resonance of mythological creatures is the interplay between human mortality and timeless philosophical concepts, as well as the battle between our desire for civility and our animal nature. Jessica Douglas deftly explores these metaphysical conflicts in her colorful creations.
Serene, regal figures represent not only physical attractiveness, but loftier ideals as well. Some of these concepts are explicitly labelled, while others are more enigmatically portrayed by indomitable beauties. Aquatic themes are also in evidence amongst Ms. Douglas’ work and wondrous creatures both fearsome and lovely can been seen negotiating the barrier between water and air.
What these women — and very occasionally men — might represent as a whole is left to the viewer to decide. But it can certainly be said that their sensual bodies are merely the beginning of a much larger, more spiritual answer.
Jessica’s site is a little neglected these days, but take a look over here.
